We think that since the guides were still mostly intact (only small pieces had chipped off), the engine flush did actually smooth out the engine idle enough to eliminate the rattle from the tensioners/guides. So, the problem was inadvertently masked. $4,000 repair estimate. The car is only worth about $5,000 - $6,000.
I am a new forum member & planning to buy a 2008 Q7 TDI in the next couple of months in Australia. I would welcome any advice on whether the extra cost of the 4.2 TDI is justified over the 3.0 TDI. Also, has anyone had experience with a performance chip in the 3.0 or 4.2 TDI.

Not a Q7, but a Cayenne 4.2 V8 - essentially the same engine. I'm getting 32 ish solo, and I got 25 on a trip to Provence with the van on. Better than my previous X5 with the 6 pot diesel. Less in England when towing due I think to constant heavy traffic conditions.
