Back in the 90s they took a e34 (5 series) and ran it over 2 million miles, just performing the standard maintenance. 3 Continue holding the "Odometer/Trip Reset" button until the message center display reads "OIL SERVICE," "INSPECTION" or "RESET." 4 Release the button, then press and hold the button again until the message center display reads "RESET" or "RE." 5 Release the "Odometer/Trip Reset" button completely, then press and release it once.

The E46 uses a mileage countdown not the older style green lights system. This counts down from approx 15,000 miles once reset. BMW recommend 2 year service intervals if you aren't hitting that
